My friends are all from other states (OH, NY, CA, CO mostly) where making friends is easier. We invite each other over for dinner (locals don't - they meet at Starbucks). A friend in OR says the same thing about Ashland where she retired.

Lots of organized volunteerism here (Red Cross, autumn food bank donation campaigns, etc) but little casual sharing such as asking someone to help change my tire - someone I helped with his taxes earlier in the year..
What a thoughtful analysis of the "Seattle Freeze". Maybe we should rename it the WA Freeze.

Just curious; what's the risk of fire danger in Bellingham and around Lake Whatcom from forest fires? I imagine the fire risk is increasing, as the area gets dryer, and bark beetles kill off more trees. It's been a huge problem in neighboring BC for the last decade or more.

There was actually a fire on Stewart Mountain beside Lake Whatcom just a week or two ago. It was nothing like the fires in Canada, but it still took firefighters a few days to extinguish.

Glad you're enjoying it, and welcome to the area. Oh, and thanks for following up with what you decided to do. So often OPs and first time posters never let anyone know what they end up doing. See you out and about!
