My boyfriend and I are moving to the Tacoma area from middle Tennessee in mid-June. We don't have the money to come up and house hunt face to face, so I'm trying to scout out the area preemptively. We have a large 75lb. dog who needs a lot of room to run, so we're trying to find a small 2BR house with a fenced in yard.

What I'm looking for is: what is the price range in the Tacoma area, where are the areas we should avoid and where are the areas we should look into? He's going to be working at Ft. Lewis, so whatever commute knowledge you have would also be much appreciated!

Thanks all!

My husband is stationed at Ft Lewis and we live in DuPont, literally 2 miles from the gate. The rents here tend to be a little pricey and the yards small, but traffic in these parts is horrible, so convenience to Ft Lewis is of the utmost importance.

Depending on how far he wants to commute, I would recommend Steilacoom, Lacey, Yelm, University Place, Roy or Puyallup. Lakewood is close, but there are parts that are not very nice, so you'd need to check that area out closely. I'd stay of out Tacoma as well.

Have just spent a lovely weekend in Tacoma scouting out the place. Every neighborhood we've been to in north Tacoma (essentially north of 6th Ave/Division Street) has been quite nice and well-kept and seem like great places to live, with good access to waterfront and nice shopping districts as well as the downtown. We haven't looked south of there yet, but seems like very nice housing stock around as well.

docwatson - not sure what your price range is, but my house in currently on the market. I live in North Tacoma near 6th ave. 3bd, 1.5 bath, 2 car garage and very large fenced back yard. Would be great for your dog! We are moving to DC in July. Private message me if you want the link to my agent.

Not sure from your posting if you're looking to rent or to buy. You should be able to find a home to purchase for under $100K. Your commute to JBLM from downtown Tacoma will be around 30 minutes. Although the Hilltop neighborhood has improved, I would still stay away from it.
Best of luck!

Sandy
