My hubby is entertaining a job offer in Aberdeen (we're moving from Vegas!) BUT, we have a special needs kiddo and I would feel more comfortable living in a bigger city (ie. Olympia). Is the commute between Olympia and Aberdeen reasonable? With weather and traffic? Thanks for any input!

It should take about an hour one-way as the distance is about 50-60 miles. Traffic shouldn't be a problem as the traffic around the Olympia area will be going in the opposite direction. Best to live in west Olympia area if possible. Weather will be wet and rainy most of the time in the winter with occasional but infrequent light snow or ice but the roadway should be mostly clear almost all the time. It is not a mountainous drive.

Agreed. It's actually somewhat common- at least in the reverse. I know several people who live in the Aberdeen area but work in and around Olympia (as job options/opportunities in Oly are better than in Aberdeen). As Scirocco said, figure 2 to 2 1/2 hours out of your work day for round trip commute time (traffic dependant)... but that's generally the worst of it.

Podcasts, books on CD, satellite radio etc. help pass the 10 or 12 hours of commuting each week.

Thanks, Dendrite, good points.

It also reminds me that there is a bus that goes between Olympia (the Greyhound station) and Aberdeen. I believe it's operated by Grays Harbor Transit.

The trip from my office on the West-side of Olympia to Aberdeen takes just under one hour. Traffic is very low-density. If your husband's job is on the other side of Aberdeen, or you'll live in East Olympia, the commute will take longer. You might want to look for houses on Olympia's West-side, or in the Steamboat Island area.

Here is the bus schedule.
Grays Harbor Transit | Schedules | Route 40 - Weekday | Monday - Friday
It is more time-consuming on the bus but maybe it could work if needed or be a plan B as needed.

My sister-in-law made this very commute daily for quite a while. Very possible, about 50 to 70 minutes one way depending on traffic (although traffic on this highway is pretty light, save for holiday weekends, and even then it's not too bad!), and a very pretty drive. If the commute time doesn't bother you, I say why not?, go for it!
