rofl.

a lot of dc's projects are pretty upgraded, a lot of them have central A/C and heat, dishwashers, balcanies, sheds (for the townhome units), and so on.
those may be basic amenities but for projects, its luxury. Almost makes me think DC has the wealthiest ghettos for any major city, but the mentality is the same as any other ghetto in America. lol.

Hell if it wasn't for the fact that I'd be surrounded by ne'er-do-wells I'd consider getting on section 8 and living in one of those. What the hell is the rent on S8 anyway?

Depends on your income, roughly about 30%.
I've met people who pay anything from $60 a month to about 500 maybe.

yea most projects have a lot of people that sit on the porch all day, or females that have like 10 kids and expect the gov't to take care of them. and then because of the parent not being around or not raised their child properly, the kids hang out in the street only to have a life filled of crime. smh sad.
but there are the folks that live in projects the work, not as many as there should be, but theres quite a few.

I guess that's the double-edged sword of our current welfare system. Some folks use it as a safety net to try and get back on their feet, others just become complacent and live off the government teat.

There are some people who will never leave the section 8 apartments. I have met people who were making over 85k and paying market rate rent for their apartment but they would not leave.

Not unlike the trust fund kids who live off their parents wealth, eh?

I would agree with the second part of this statement. Some DC neighborhoods can be deceptive. It can be difficult to know when you're in a bad neighborhood or not.

And the housing stock is quite good in DC, even in the so-called bad areas. The city doesn't have any slums. What Washingtonians call the slums here, I call condos. As far as slums go, I don't think there's anywhere worse than Camden, NJ and Kensington (aka The Badlands) in Philly.

The areas I saw in DC looked like working class neighborhoods. Nothing fancy but not too shabby either. Hell, I've been to smaller cities like Joliet, Illinois that has crummier looking buildings. A lot of the areas I saw even look better than Scranton, PA (where I currently live near).

Am I looking in the wrong areas or does DC do a good job of keeping things cleaned up as compared to other cities? I was expecting to see crumbling homes, burnt out buildings and debris everywhere like I've seen in other places.
It amazes me how some people are so interested in DC's ghetto/projects/gangs.

Are you moving from your ghetto into DC's pj's?
