I've heard a good number of people refer to the east side of downtown around Penn Quarter and Chinatown as the "East End". Has it been called this for a good amount of time or is this a recent nickname? Seems a bit odd to me since we have the west end which is rather small and isolated and with the east end we have a rather large, undefinite area.

I just saw that on an apartment ad yesterday and was wondering where that was. I've never heard it before. I thought they meant what is called "Hill East", the area just east of Capitol Hill.

It's been used for awhile, in comparison to the 'West End' which is that area between Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle. After Pennsylvania Avenue was closed, the area around Chinatown was collectively referred to as the East End as part of discussions about the redevelopment efforts going on around that side of town.

Commercial real estate people use the term a lot to distinguish the location their buildings from those in the traditional downtown.

Technically speaking, the Penn Quarter/Chinatown/Judiciary Square neighborhoods comprise the "East End", which is so named because it represents the eastern end of the downtown district as per L'Enfant's original plans for the city. You don't hear it used very frequently, except in real estate listings for condos along Mass Ave. when they don't want to tell you that you're looking at a condo along the eastern end of Mass Ave. NW.

hmm fancy. thanks for the input!

On another note, do you think that Noma with all its high rise (relative for DC) glory will become part of this 'east end?' it seems to me like it will be very downtown-y
