Personally I think Ballston is pretty dull, even compared to the other areas on "Wilson Corridor" in Arlington. You can probably find a place in Clarendon or Courthouse for a similar amount of money, and those areas have more to offer in terms of charm, bars, restaurants, etc. Ballston does have a lot of dry cleaners, if that's important.
For the most part, people mean the Ballston Corridor when they say Ballston. Court House, Clarendon, Virginia Square, and Ballston itself. As only the first two are actually on Wilson Boulevard, the term "Wilson Corridor" has never really gained much currency...
Is that true? lol, looking at this map, Crime in Washington, DC there's like robberies and breakins everywhere!
If you want a nice crime-free area, try the middle of the Sahara Desert. Or maybe the top of Mt. Everest. If, on the other hand, you'd prefer to live in a vibrant, young, walkable, upscale area where crime simply isn't a factor in day-to-day life, Ballston would be a good choice...
I've heard a lot of good things about Ballston in Arlington, VA. What do you guys think of it? Are there good places (non-chain) to eat? Any places to shop? any nice outdoor cafes etc? Is it safe? Ballston was recommended to me by several people, since they said Bethesda is nice but can be pricey.
If we lived in the Arlington area, how long would it take by the metro to get to Bethesda?
Thank you!
If you're in Ballston, you're there. If you're near a ART line, you're feeling like Picasso and Cassat on the A train, not far -- the funky groove places are along the way to Ballston -- up wilson from Rosslyn -- if you're in Arlington outside of Glebe roade or a metro connection -- not as quick.
Hop on the ART -- for the Arlington Rapid Transist and calculate the carbon footprint benefits! or use the subway awesome connections, fun people, and since you're planning on showing up -- even more fun ! Check out Winslow on Wilson and another music/dance venues! The Ballroom!

The top of Mt Everest is a pretty dangerous, dog-eat-dog place from what I hear. And the weather is awful. I'd rather live in Arlington.
Ballston has a lot of people hanging out and causing trouble
Its nicer in Clarendon but Ballston Mall has alot of drifters and losers hanging out all day not doing much of anything. I do not know if they have a job to do or not but they seem to have alot of time on their hand.

There are a couple of homeless people who hang out by the metro and the 7-11 but if you're worried about that I thnk you won't be satisfied anywhere in the world. Arlington is extremely safe and has very low crime. You really can't do any better from that perspective.

Yes, although Arlington and especially Ballston is extremely safe I've noticed the thugs hanging outside the mall the past couple of years. Very out of place. Curiously the Washington City Paper did a story about the gangs in DC around 7th and O Sts. One of the guys who was shooting up the area and later killed himself met his girlfriend at Ballston Mall -- she worked there apparently.
