Hello,

I am planning on moving to Bethesda or Silver Spring in about 2 months. I will be working in Jessup,MD. I used MapQuest to trace my route from both places. The results were as follows: Bethesda (25.48 miles) 33-minute commute; and Silver Spring (20.95 mies) 26-minute commute. I am wondering if these numbers are realistic or if they failed to consider rush hour traffic in the morning/afternoon. I've been told that Bethesda can be bad. I don't anything regarding Silver Spring's traffic. In case it helps, my work hours will be from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. I'd appreciate any input/advice you might be able to offer. Thanks.

Those numbers are on the low side for rush hour.

use google maps to get directions then click on the "traffic" icon in the upper right hand corner for information on typical traffic speeds.

If you choose Silver Spring and could travel on Route 29 to Jessup, you probably would only have a 30 minute commute. There is very light traffic northbound in the morning on 29. Southband is not bad in the evening either (until you get into the heart of downtown Silver Spring). If you have to get on 495 at any point, you will probably get stuck in traffic even with a reverse commute. In the evening, 495 is slow on both the inner and outer loop, especially in Montgomery County. Bethesda probably would be a yuckier commute.
