My family is looking to relocate from the Kensington, MD to Waldorf for cost and work reasons.

What is the the Mattawoman area in Waldorf like? Is it safe? We are looking at a housing neighborhood off of Pierce road.

What are the elementary schools like?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I believe that's over near Western Pkwy - I wouldn't recommend it, especially coming from Kensington. If you are going to move to Charles County I would suggest La Plata over Waldorf. The crime in and around Waldorf, especially St. Charles and near the mall and Western Pkwy is higher that I feel comfortable with. Of course you will get people on here that say the crime in Waldorf is not bad, that's their opinion and in comparison to DC maybe not, but for me its getting bad. You can go on the Charles Co. Sheriff's offc website and check the crime of each neighborhood as well as read press release crime stats. Maybe that will help you in deciding.

Thanks for the response,

I was afraid that this was the case. I went on a drive around Waldorf last Sunday and I have to say that there were a great deal more sketchy areas than I expected. Sketchy meaning store windows with bars and employees behind plexiglass. Furthermore, I did see police officers with guns drawn on route 5 on my way down to Waldorf. The money saved may not be worth the risks.

Other areas you might want to consider in Charles County are White Plains, La Plata, Port Tobacco, Bryantown and Hughesville...they are all within close proximity to Waldorf but are far less developed with far less population density. You can check out school information at greatschools.com .
