Greetings all,

This is my first post on here, but really liked reading the helpful advice you've given others. I've visited Maryland a few times, and comb over threads quite often. There is nothing like direct info from those in the know. I am over 35 looking to move from nyc to Maryland. For familiarity and comfort level -I'd like the area to have a healthy black American population. Middle class to upper middle class professionals with cool, low-key vibes. I'd be working remote but would like access to a major area with a lot of stores, businesses etc., access to things - that I could travel to by walking, quick bus ride or train. (Will work on getting a car few months). Something with a slight city vibe and slightly suburban - if that exists in MD. Budget for 1 bd max $1940. I liked near Arundel Mills, and Laurel as far as mood, but think transportation is limited in those 2 areas. Downtown Silver Springs looked nice, but didn't feel very welcoming to me at all. (No to living directly in Baltimore or D.C after NYC). Any places yall can think of that have similar vibes near transportation? Thanx

Middle class to upper middle class professionals ... near transportation...
There are several possible choices.

google "Judgmental Maps + Baltimore" you'll see a fresh copy of this image.
Look at the screen shot -- left edge middle and top edge middle for two of them.

Agreed because of public transportation availability. Other options include Wheaton, Takoma Park and Hyattsville. They don't have to be your final destination, but are good places to rent while looking around. They all are diverse with Hispanic pluralities and a substantial Black population.

Gaithersburg could be an option.

Look up "Rio area", "Washingtonian in Gaithersburg" and "Downtown Crown". Definitely city/suburban vibe.

You'll find that "quick" in the DMV is relative (to traffic!!) Last week we drove to Tyson's Mall in Virginia. It took us a quick 10 minutes to get there, but 50 minutes to get back home on the same road. Speaking of driving, with all the tolls around here, you'll want to get an "E-Z Pass Flex" transponder for your future car.

Good luck

It could help if you elaborated on why Silver Spring did not "feel very welcoming" to you, because I agree that SS would be probably the best fit to what you requested otherwise.

Since you mention that a "healthy black American population" is important to you, you could look into Prince George's county. For what you're looking for, I'm mostly familiar with the new apartments in College Park (The Aster) and in Riverdale Park Station (Pilot house). Not super urban, but not suburban either. Both apartment complexes have a metro station, groceries and the University events within walking distance, nice bike trails and outdoor areas (Artemesia and Greenbelt Park), and I think it overall fits your "upper middle class professionals with cool, low-key vibes" requirement.

Good luck finding a good fit indeed!
