Happy Monday,

Has anyone done the Aspen Hill/northern Silver Spring to Springfield Reverse Commute? I realize 495 is horrendous. If you have, what time did you leave, and how long did it take?

What about metro to Franconia from Glenmont?

Finally, is the HOV daily an option, or would I be going the wrong way (to VA in morning).

I don’t think either direction is a reverse commute. What do you mean by that?

I would not attempt that commute, as I'd estimate at least an hour and a half each way. You can use Google maps for the public transport estimate. The one time I tried to use the Glenmont parking garage, it filled up early. I used Wheaton or Forest Glen when I had to use Metro. (I was only going to Arlington from the Wheaton area and it was about 55 minutes.)

And you are right about the car option-- there is not an HOV lane on I-95 outbound in the AM.

Live near(ish) the job you have or find a job near(ish) where you prefer to live.

From Aspen Hill to somewhere in D.C. (route unknown, but apparently you have one in mind) would not be a reverse commute. At a certain point, depending on the way you go, it becomes a reverse commute.. Are you only concerned about the second part?

if you are going to drive, I recommend going directly through Washington DC. Take Georgia to 16th street. There used to be an entrance into Rock Creek Park At Portal Drive which was one-way for commuters. That took you down until you could cross the river and get onto I-95 south. I am not sure if Rock Creek is still open, but through this District is still faster than going around the Beltway.

I wouldn't consider this a reverse commute at all. If you're going directly into VA, there's more traffic going from MD to VA than the other way around. If you're going through DC first, there's more traffic going into DC from MD than the other way around.

Yeah. That's a bad, long commute no matter how -- or when (time of day) you do it.

But if it's what you have to do...it is what it is.
