I have often wondered this. When people asked where I'm form I use to say D.C. Them I started saying Maryland
Now I say Maryland near D.C I'm wondering for those of you living on the Maryland side of the DMV do you associate yourself more with D.C or the rest of Maryland?

I grew up right outside of DC (Silver Spring but really Langley Park). I worked in DC for many years. I would go to Georgetown bars on weekends. However, I still always said I was from Maryland and if someone asked where in Maryland, I would say "very close to DC." When I lived in Laurel, I would say "halfway between DC and Baltimore." Now, in Anne Arundel, I say "not too far from Baltimore."

I guess in summation, I have always associated more with the rest of Maryland than DC. DC was just a geographic reference point.

Where I tell people I am from and where I "associate" myself (i.e. my identity) with may not be the same thing.

I live 10 miles from DC proper. I tell people outside of the DMV area that I live in DC. I identify as a Marylander.

100% Maryland. I get asked that a lot here in Hawaii. I never say DC. Always "Maryland". Or "Maryland, near DC".

Nothing about DC I identify with, and most of Maryland is not much different.

I always say the D.C. area. If I say Maryland they automatically think Baltimore, so I just say D.C. area

Interesting question. For me, when I moved to Silver Spring in 2003, I spent so much time hanging out in DC that I felt more DC. However, after moving to DC for four years from 2011-2015, I realized just how different it is actually living in thr District. It's hard to explain, but within days I realized I had really over-estimated my DC identity. All I can say is, it's just different when you live in the heart of DC. Since my fiance and I bought a house in Silver Spring back in 2016, I wholeheartedly identify as a Marylander.
