Hello,
My husband and I currently live in Northern Virginia but have some job opportunities in Bethesda. We clearly cannot afford to live in Bethesda. Is Columbia, MD, reasonably safe for a family, and could we feasibly purchase a home for around $400k? Or are there any other places we should look at that are a max of 45 minutes from Bethesda? Thanks.

That commute would take well over 45m each way unless you travel at very odd hours. Depending on the size house you need, your best bet would probably be the cheaper parts of Rockville/Aspen Hill/North Kensington. That'd keep you off the Beltway, at least.

I should have actually mentioned that we both work night shift, so we'd be heading toward Bethesda to be there at 7pm. Would that make a difference? Thanks!

Oh yeah, that'll definitely help. Hopefully someone who knows the Columbia submarket better will weigh in on what $400K buys.

As with any jurisdiction it's best to get advice from a realtor but keep an eye out for HOA-type fees; Columbia also has a sort of association fee that may be added onto property taxes depending on your neighborhood. There are definitely TH and SFHs under $400k but if you have a high HOA + Columbia association fees your mortgage might be more like one on a $425k home, for instance.

At your budget have you looked into Fairland section of Silver Spring?
