It actually was, in the last sentence

People can be wrong about racism . It happens. Nobody is perfect.

I'm not sure what the anecdote has to do with the topic , which deals with structural racism endemic in this country and its many tentacles.

Thanks for chiming in. In our daily lives, incidents like I described happen. It's tough to negotiate your way through them sometimes when race becomes the issue being discussed not the immediate concern (in this case, the lice and the school/district procedure.)

My friend was very upset this all happened, but the kids are still at the school, so hopefully cooler heads prevailed. I was wondering if some would see systemic racism of some kind in this situation where I did not.

I couldn't fault a parent for feeling their kid might be singled out and reacting to that. Parents are protective of their kids and don't want them to endure this kind of thing. A lot of gray area in life especially navigating complex issues like this that we still can't do easily in this country. In the words of my grandfather ain't no one perfect

What exactly was the issue?

Did the parents believed the lice singled out their kid for being black? Did the parents believe health regulations should be waived or ignored because their kid is black?

In my experience, lice do not discriminate. As mentioned, my kid had them. We dealt with it immediately and effectively. The next day the school nurse checked him out simply to make sure we had done so. To let him come back without doing so would have been very reckless and irresponsible. Not to mention a violation of the rules which apply to all of us. It is not as if he was strip searched or branded a leper.

No gray area at all. Seems common sense you have prevailed instead of the parents pulling the race card.

I think common sense did prevail in the end, the kids are still in the school. The story has a happy ending so far. It is just an example of how these issues become more complicated in the real world where there is more gray area (I feel) than we often find in a chatroom.

I don't see why there was ever an issue in the first place.

I just watched a video about this recently. It's not something that's made up, it's a true statement.
