Leaving Bowie (197 and 50) at 3p…headed to Hampton VA
SO would you go:
-- 50 west to 495 south to Woodrow Wilson, through NoVa and 95 south…..OR
-- 301 S to the Harry Nice, though King George Port Royal to 95 S.

My VA friends say take 301. Thursday after 3p will be bad, worse than a "normal bad Thursday"

But I'm not crazy about the 301 option: 1) it's two lanes in some parts, 2) speed limit is lower.
But is THAT better than taking a chance on Nova traffic.…..I mean 95 might not be that bad, right??
I COULD catch a break and get through a luckily-timed sweet spot of open road, right?

Would it make a difference if you could leave Bowie by 2p?

Thanks

We are taking 95S leaving Ellicott City by 1PM.

301 has never really saved us time unless there is a horrific accident on 95. Too many traffic lights, and the lights are timed as such where you stop frequently.

FWIW we are heading down to the Outer Banks, and have the option of avoiding I64 E if that is backing up around rush hour (which it always seems to) by taking Virginia 460.

Default Re: Traveling South

Traffic on 301S will more likely be heavy Thursday and Friday evening. Traffic backs up way before the bridge since it drops down to 2 lanes only. Even worse if there is an accident on or near the bridge.

I took 95 south down to fredericksville today (thursday). There was a crash at the fredericksville exit and it was backed up almost all the way to 495. Probably a 2-3 hour delay. Used the express toll lanes and it was $21 , but worth it even though there was still about a 30 minute delay merging back into the main lanes.

I should have taken 301 I guess, but I normally can't stand the stoplights.

What TIME did you leave?

We didn't leave the Bowie area until 5p. UGH!.
I couldn't believe we were that late. I was prepared for the worst. We took the express lanes. But we didn't hit that much traffic at all. Not even the merge back into the regular lanes down past Quantico.

Got to Hampton at about 8:20 -- not bad at all considering our driver doesn't even speed
(I'd have gotten us there AT LEAST 20 minutes sooner)

Too late now, but if you have a smart phone get the Google Maps app and turn on traffic. Keep an eye on your optional directions and decide accordingly.

We left at 2:30PM. Arrived around 9 PM.

Blech. Beltway stunk. 95S to Quantico was a disaster (regular was horrible, Express was bad where it merges with 95).

Smooth sailing as we got close to Richmond.

Took less than 5 hours to get back, though. Left Memorial Day at 6:15 AM. Was a new record (and not really speeding, either)
