Semi off-topic/ Verizon FIOs vs Xfinity Comcast internet in DMV area? (apartment, condo)

Which internet service are you all using and what is more reliable?

And are they like for like--for example does 15 Mbps of FIOS internet perform like 15 Mbps of cable, or are the Mbps speeds hard to gauge because of the different technologies?

Both Verizon and Comcast are not very nice companies, but that said, I hear Fios performs better, but in many parts of Montgomery county, Comcast is the only option and many apartment/condo places shut out other options.

On the websites though, Comcast offers higher speeds. Verizon seems way more aggressive in trying to force you into bundles, I can't even find a way to see internet only prices on their site.

Anyway how would 15mbps Fios compare to 25Mbps Cable?

Don't assume you will be able to get FiOS. I've moved 3 times in 5 years in the DMV and it's never been offered to me.

I prefer FiOS by far. For years Comcast was the only option I could get and they were mediocre at best. Verizon does make it easy to default into buying their bundles, but you can pick whatever you want. I agree that their website is not the greatest when it comes to searching for options and pricing though.

Verizon does have a way to determine if FiOS is available at a given address.
They do offer Internet only, Internet plus TV and Internet plus TV plus home phone.
But the rate ($) for Internet only is higher than for the same speed combined with TV, or all three.
That is why it is difficult to navigate the site.
And if you call CS, they will out and out lie about the availability of certain packages.
I have found the 15/5 MBPS adequate, but upon renewing with a special offer, rep said 25/25 was the minimum.
As soon as that was put on my account, I went on line, changed it back to 15/5 and knocked $10 off my bill.
As far as the other guys, I'm afraid to deal with a company who can't seem to decide what their name should be.
