My husband and I are now thinking about buying a home in Gaithersburg. Probably central Gaithersburgoff 355 near the Gaithersburg MARC, or maybe up along Midcounty Hwy. Anyone know anything about commuting from there to DC, probably Dupont area or somewhere else on the red line? Is it pretty easy to drive to the Shady Grove metro and park there, or is traffic terrible just getting to the metro station?

Thanks in advance!

I would say that it's pretty easy to get to Shady Grove from those places. Metro is the way to go for a commute from there to DC. MARC would be good too, but probably need to transfer to Metro on that commute. Driving will suck unless you go in at 6 am and return before 3 pm.

I know people who make that commute from Gaitherburg to Shady Grove to downtown every day, so it's doable.

It is the way to go downtown, but Metro is pricey compared to other cities like NYC. They charge you based on how far you travel, so it can add up, particularly if you need to make bus connections.

I should have added that there are Ride-On bus routes from those areas that take you to Shady Grove station.

I used MARC when I lived in near Gaithersburg (North Potomac) and loved it. You'd just have to also take a quick Metro trip.

Alternatively, as another suggested, you can drive to Shady Grove and take the Metro all the way. Because it's the first stop you'll always have a seat.

At least going in in the morning. Coming home may be different - but you'll eventually learn some tricks.

It might be worth looking at what routes of Ride-on busses are convienent from the Shady Grove Metro to your potential neighborhoods. It would save you from fighting for a parking space (and the cost of one) at the Metro station
