I'm looking to move out of Northwest DC (staying with a friend right now) and into the Maryland Suburbs. Since the cost of living here is expensive, I'm forced to find something in a far out burb. I found a place in Upper Marlboro that I like. I prefer PG county so that's why I focused my search for an apt in this area.

I'm working in Rockville near the White Flint Metro presently and I use public transportation to get to work, but I drive as well so I would most likely be commuting by car once I move to the MD suburbs.

How long would a commute from Upper Marlboro or (Prince George's County in general) to Rockville take on a normal day? 270 & Montrose Rd exit.

My work hours are 8:30am-5:30pm.

Would it be insane to even attempt a commute like this?

Insane? No. A pain in the ass some days? Yes.

There are people where I live in Calvert County who commute to Rockville, the Pentagon and Crystal City.

If you choose to drive to work, my advice is to get a EZ pass and take the ICC MD-200. Taking the beltway all the way to whiteflint/Rockville is a pain most days. In the morning, the beltway tends to come to crawl after the 95 split all the way to 270. You can take ICC as an alternate route, but it will cost you $4 one way.

From Upper Marlboro to Rockville, the ICC is not really going to save any time. Most likely will take longer because they would be making a loop that is out of the way.
Best bet as hard as it may be to believe is to just hop on the beltway and stay there till they get to 355,
On 95% of the time, there will be no traffic to speak of until you get to the 650 exit, from upper Marlboro till 650, maybe a half hour, from 650 to 355 could be another 45 minutes due to the traffic.
I would certainly leave no later than 7am to make the trip. 6:45 am would be better.
