Charles County really boils down to an intereesting mix of factors:

Some of the Positives:
  • Lower Home Prices
  • Convenient Shopping in Waldorf
  • Great Hometown Feel in La Plata
  • Potential to buy property that is secluded
  • Generally lower property tax rates
  • Lots of parks, recreational facilities, waterfront facilities
  • Proximity to Andrews AFB, Indian Head Navy Base, Swan Point Resort Community, and Washington, D.C.
  • Proximity to Bud's Creek Raceway

Some of the Negatives:
  • Traffic can be overly congested, particularly during rush hour
  • 25 Minute Commute to DC without traffic, 1-1.5 hours during rush hour
  • Some of the properties are on well/septic systems which require unique care/maintainence
  • Northern side of county is being heavily developed

I would strongly recommend Charles County to anybody who is looking to find a place that is more rural than PG County. I also see the lower property tax rate as a huge benefit and the fact that you can purchase a very nice single family home on 2+ acres of land for the same price you would pay for a townhouse in Bowie, but I personally like the idea of having a large yard and privacy.

Take a look at Southern Maryland Weblog (http://teambenya.typepad.com - broken link) It has good information for news on the region.

Well we are only 18 and 19, and this will be our first time living on our own. We want a place that we will be able to have a nice apartment and be close to things to do (shopping, movies, restaurants...etc.). We also need to be close to a Target (thats where we work). His family is moving to Cobb Island, and we would like to be close to them but still have our own space.

You should try to rent a house. Apartments are the worse places to live in Charles County, for the most part. There are some new ones in Sheffield on Billingsley Road that may be okay. Try apartmentratings.com and see what you see for St. Charles.
