I'm relocating from TX to Maryland next month. After reading these forum Silver Spring seems to offer most of what I'm looking for at least for the first few months. I'm a single female, not familiar with the area and since it will be my first time there I am concerned about safety. The area near to the metro seem to be the safest according to some posters here, but are there any other areas in Silver Springs I can check out? Also many of the apartment reviews are mixed (mice, roaches, noise because of thin walls etc) are there any close to the metro around $1700.)that I can risk renting online before I arrive? (Risky I know )

I want to suggest Archstone Wheaton Station which is a nearly new project. BTW, "Wheaton" is just a post office within Silver Spring, not a separate town. It is new enough it should not have mice or roaches, however the reviews indicate mechanical problems. It is in your price range, and a very convenient location just a short walk to the Metro stop.

Another possibility is the condos which you can find on Realtor.com. Look for ones around the Forest Glen or Wheaton stations. Since condos are generally better built than rental apartments, they may be less likely to have thin walls.

In any case, inspecting the apartment will not guarantee you won't have mice or roaches in the future. It is a risk of apartment life, so I would look for reviews which say the current management is responsive to problems.

Another thought is that you can afford a townhouse or small house for $1700. Then you will have more control over whether there are mice or roaches, and they are generally in safe neighborhoods.

Good info, thanks for this. I hadn't considered or seen any rental condos but there are some good options on realtor.com though they are older buildings.
