My spouse and I are interested in purchasing a home in Crofton, but today I read about the very sad and horrific murder of a 14 year old boy by a gang in 2009. Can anyone comment on gang activity in Crofton? I know gang violence can spring up anywhere, but a child being beaten to death is such a tragedy.

I'm sure you are looking for a response from a Crofton resident, and I hope someone will contribute. The beating sounds like an aberration for Crofton. It also reads to me more like bullying of a specific kid. The articles mentioned that he was small, and may have had a dispute with the older boys who knew him.

BTW, the parents of the dead boy sued the 6 gang members and received a settlement. Article here: Unusual Settlement Reached In Crofton Beating Case « CBS Baltimore

I hope you will still consider Crofton, as it sounds like a very nice area overall.

You'll find gangs in the most unusual places. They aren't just for urban cities anymore. Usually violence occurs when gangs are in close proximity to others and are either fighting for turf, defending their turf, or involved in drug activity. (Sad that people are dying over land or colors that they don't even own). Where I live, there are a few gangs and there is almost always "activity", but most aren't bad enough to make it to the news. Mostly misdemeanors, drug possession, etc. I feel relatively safe where I live. Let's be honest, unless you're in a gang or drugs, chances are, you won't be affected by them. I grew up in S.E. DC during the "DC Murder Capital of the World" and knew of no friends or family that was affected by the violence. Luck? Grace? Perhaps.

Gangs and their violence are so unnecessary in this day and age. But that's another discussion.
