Does anyone have information about services for preschool/kindergarten aged children with multiple disabilities in Howard County, MD? Our three year old has physical and cognitive delays and we are considering moving back to MD. We lived in Montgomery County when he was first born and were happy with early intervention services at the time and then moved out of state. We are considering returning to Maryland but would most likely need to be in Howard County for commuting purposes. I am interested in finding out about preschool programs for children with multiple disabilities. How do they compare to services in Montgomery county?

I do not know about services in Montgomory County, but I belive HoCo services are wonderful. We had 3 neighbors in Ellicott City with varying levels of disabilities and ages (pre-K through HS). For preschool, HoCo opperates a RECC (Regional Early Childhood Center) program at the elementary school and busing is provided (an aide rides the bus with the children). The IEP students attend the whole school day, while the "peers" attend for the morning and lunch 9-1. If the program at the local elementary doesn't meet your needs, your child will be placed in another school. We had kids bused in from varying distances. So, during my 2 year experience: for 2/3-yr olds, there were 4 IEP children, 5 peers, 3 teachers (a lead and 2 aides), a PT, and OT, and a speech pathologist. For 4-yr olds, we had 6 IEP children, 5 peers, 3 different teachers and the same PT, OT, and Speech teacher. Most of the peers continue on in the elementary school and I think it helps the IEP children entering Kindergarten as they're already familiar with the school, caffeteria, gym, outside playground, etc. We took field trips like any other pre-school - the farm, the Maryland Science center, zoo, etc. We just had more parents and teachers than typical (2:1 parents/teachers to students). I could not tell you the specific disabilities, but we had asbergers, austism, cerebral palsy. Both of the lead teachers used sign language. One little girl was mostly in a wheel chair, but learning to walk with crutches - she could hear, but not speak. BTW - two of the neighbors are doctors (OBGYN and a Cardiologist) and one is a cybersecurity specialist at Ft. Meade. (I believe they did their research as the army wife told me this was the best place she'd been to - her 5yr old daughter also had surgery at John Hopkins by Dr. Carson so she's a little biased now.) I would contact HCPSS as there is also the Cedar Lane School for children with severe to profound disabilities. Howard County Public School System I had 3-yr old triplets in my sunday school class that attended Cedar Lane School. Two of the children were moving to the RECC program when they turned 4 (their behavior was similar to the children in my daughter's class) and the other child (more severe physical disabilities) will stay at Cedar Lane.

Thanks for the info. That sounds great. Are there children who require nurses to be with them at school? Our son has seizures and here in Pennsylvania he attends preschool with a nurse.

We did not have children/nurses any at our school, so you would definitely need to contact the county. We did have students who had their own teaching aide.

Ok thank you. I will contact the county. Does the specific area within Howard County matter in terms of getting good services?
