Hello! I'm in the military and we are due to transfer in the area next summer. I'm basically looking for a good elementary/middle school to place my child. I was looking at fallsgrove apartments but came across "Huntington at King Farm" and "Residences at King Farm" townhomes. Can anyone recommend or explain what's the difference between the two? Thanks!

King Farm is a large planned community, with different developers with their own styles and amenities. Both are fairly new, and both look good. The Residences is 3 stories tall and allows pets. Huntington has a fitness center, allows pets, and has up to 3 bedroom apartments. They both have web site, and I'm not sure I'm allowed to post them. The Residences has a playground, so it may be more child-oriented. Huntington presents itself as a luxury place, and boasts about its gym, 2 outdoor pools, and 1 indoor pool. Check them for price and availablity.

Huntington has some 3-story townhouse units with a single garage. King Farm is a neo-urban community with limited parking. If you have two cars, I would ask about the parking charge.

Also, the play-space for kids is probably limited to the parks and/or sidewalks. There may not be grass around the apartments. However, you can walk to shopping easily. It isn't traditional suburbia, and you should see if you like it.

I have already checked out the websites. The one thing I'm curious about is the school system. I heard it's better to live in one of the king farm over the other due to different school system?

Richard Montgomery pryamid serves King Farm. I think it's a pretty well-regarded high school. Not sure about the other development you mentioned (i.e., what school district it is in).

OK, I have more information about the school systems, and perhaps parents can chime in. The Huntington Apartment is closest to the College Gardens Elementary School in Rockville to the south. It has an International Baccalaureat (IB) program that is vertically integrated through high school. The comments on greatschools.org are mixed. One parent though it was great, another said it was confused, and another said they would not go back. The College Gardens ES is currently rated 7 of 10.

The Residences apartment is north of Redlands Road, and probably goes to the Rosemont ES in Gaithersburg. Please confirm the assignments with the MoCo School System, but be aware the assignments can change. Rosemont appears to have a traditional program and is rated 5 of 10.

The two ES's may feed into different middle schools after 5th grade. There is a school assignment locator on their web site, but it is out-of-date, and they will not confirm its accuracy. It is best to telephone them, as they say: "For verification of any school assignment please call the BOUNDARY INFORMATION LINE at 240-314-4710 Monday - Friday 9 a.m to 2 p.m."

FWIW, the MCPSS School Locator says both the apartments are in the Rosemont ES/ Forest Oak MS/ Gaithersburg HS area. I would advise the OP to call the school system before making any decision.
