My husband has just landed a job at Andrews AFB and we will be relocating from Salt Lake City. We are a bit older, in our forties but have a new baby. Schools are not a huge issue yet. Can people recommend nice places to live with commute times. We are probably going to rent at first and don't want to spend more than $2,000 if possible. We are open to city living as well as suburb but want a safe, clean, nice place to live. We are going to be living on one salary so we won't a huge amount of money to spend. Our plan is to rent first and then look for something to buy in the $400-$500K range.

Brandywine, Upper Marlboro, Ft. Washington, Clinton, Accokeek and across the bridge in Alexandria, VA...not sure of commute times but mapwise those are the closest places I would suggest you take a look at.
Alexandria, VA (note there is Alexandria city and Alexandria in Fairfax County) has the most to do for families with young kids I think. I go there quite a bit myself to avail myself of all the activities for kids. Alexandria would be the closest thing to city living out of all those beyond DC itself. The rest are suburbs and some border on rural.
I know quite a few families that are working at Andrews that live in Clinton and Upper Marlboro.
