me too ... Gnomads other half but I had my own brick back in the UK. 1978 housebrick brown 240DL with no shiney stuff, no overdrive, lumps of foam missing from the headrests but it did have a totally sweet engine and 7 seats. 5 kids dog and even the hamster travelled everywhere in it.
My first Volvo was a '72 142E, followed by a '73 145, followed by a '76 265DL. I haven't had a Volvo since, because I liked the old boxy look, and the "me, too" appearance of the new ones puts me off.
Right now I'm considering buying what has been my dream car ever since it came out: an original Bertone Coupe (built 1978-1981). I have found one that is in good shape for what I consider to be a reasonable price, but I don't need (or have room for) a third vehicle right now.
BIL and I raced a 122S back in the early 60's. It was a 59 model with the 4 speed and twin carbs. We had some work done on it at the Volvo dealer that pushed the engine to about 150HP. But all 150 of them were there. It would stay with some of the lesser muscle cars of the day considering the early 60's was just the beginning of the muscle car era. I wish I could have that car back now. It was a great driving car and got decent gas mileage considering all we had done to it. Ever heard the little Volvo engine wearing a set of custom made headers? It could sound rather beastly especially with no muffler and side pipe. It had a sound of its own.

I worked at a Volvo plant in Virginia. We had hundreds of the Bertone 262C coupes, I think you are referring to,with the shortened top, come through there we worked on. Cool car to drive. I liked the gold one with the manual shift.
I think the "bricks" are considered the 100/200 series (140, 240, 260, etc), the 700/900 series (740, 760, 960, S90, etc) and the 850. Production years were 1966-2000, so they made Volvo bricks for 34 years!
Production dates were 1966-1974 for the 100 Series, 1974-1993 for the 200 Series, 1982-1992 for the 700 Series, 1990-1998 for the 900 Series/S90, and 1992-2000 for the 850/S70.
As I stated before, the car I came home from the hospital in when I was born was a brick, a 1987 740 to be exact. I always liked the design and safety of the bricks. My dad's parents had a 1984 and 1987 740, a 1994 850, and a 1999 XC70 Cross Country (from 1984-2001ish), my parents had a 1982 hearing aid beige 240 about the time I was born (1992), and my cousin had a 1998 S70 as his first car around 2012-13, so there have been at least 6 bricks in the family. Unfortunately there are no bricks in the family now.
All were good cars except the '99 XC70, my grandparents said the quality of Volvo went way downhill in the late '90s. They swore off Volvo after that.
