One of the cars on my lists is a VW Jetta. I'll be looking to pay in the 5k range, which in my area gets me a 2000-2003/4 with about 80-100k miles. Just wondering if there are any Jetta specific questions to ask when buying the car. Are there any certain parts that go out at a certain amount of miles? How about certain things I should look for that could be problems in the future?
Well considering every owner I know or have spoken to with that vintage VW has experienced nothing but atrocious reliability issues, I would never even give them a second thought.
Everything on them starts to go down the sh*tter at around 100k. That said, on the rare occasion nothing is broken they are fun little cars and a pleasure to drive.

Hmmm... I'm driving a 97 Golf with about 350,000 miles on it. I must have been lucky too.
I'm also considering a passat, I didn't realize the Passat was the only one of the 2000+ models to actually be made in germany. The rest were mexican built
I'm 22 years old, I was looking into VW because I thought they were known to be quite reliable cars, I won't able able to afford a lot of fixes.
I've heard that. Not major issues, but quite a few little quirky things that - all added together - make for a very unpleasant experience.
Well, in the case I was involved in, a CV shaft blew apart and then the following month the motor seized up and killed itself. Needless to say this particular car is literally minced up metal on top of a scrap pile.

I guess the Mexicans knew what they were doing. (See Above)

Buy a honda or toyota. Not as "cool", but the reliability will be worlds better..
