Hi all! I live in Central Maryland and we are considering buying a vacation property which could also serve as our retirement home. Therefore, I have researched good areas to retire that are close enough to where I currently live in order to serve as a vacation home for now. We have been to Shenandoah and love it there. Charlottesville was listed as one of the best places to retire and we like the idea of having access to arts and entertainment as well as outdoor activities. Soooo, we are looking for an area convenient to U.S. 29. We would like shopping and activities to be convenient but we would like to live kind of in the country--at least find a wooded lot. Something close to some type of body of water would be great! Any ideas? I've just got to get away!!!!!! Thanks so much:-)

I'd say look up in Madison County or Rappahannock County along Rt 231... Beautiful areas and convenient to Rt 29 and C'Ville...

Good Luck!!!

Nelson country is also great....Had a vacation home there for a number of years.....land prices are still pretty high but you might be able to walk into a good deal where someone is trying to bail out on a vacation home that they own in the area......

We have a vacation home in Basye, VA in Bryce Resort. From our home in Northern Virginia it is roughly 100 miles and under 2 hours to get to. There is a lake and golf course for fun in the summer and a small ski resort for winter fun. There is a nice mix of retirees and second home owners there as well. We really love it. It is beautiful and secluded. Added bonus-cheap property taxes...
