Where is there a Fredericksburg-type place, quaint and historic, with good homes? I would like to find a home or townhome where I could walk out my door and explore an old city, maybe get a cup of coffee along the way. I'd like to be reasonably close to shopping amenities like Best Buy, etc., and I'd like to have a nice mall within a reasonable distance. A good hospital too. I use to live in Alexandria and I know I'm not interested in living in NOVA in any way!!! Oh, and did I say friendly neighbors? Any direction in this matter would be appreciated. Thanks.

I like Fredericksburg. But certainly this isn't the only quaint and historic place in Virginia. What's wrong with options?

Lexington, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville have a quaintness to them. Also, try a neighborhood like the Fan or the Museum District/West of the Boulevard in Richmond. You'd be close to Carytown and not far from Big Box/Mall shopping. You could walk out of your historic Victorian era rowhouse and head down to the corner to pick up a cup of coffee. It's a very diverse but cohesive neighborhood (retirees, young professionals, families, VCU students etc..). Tons of local/eclectic shops and restaurants nearby.

Also, while there is a hospital literally in the Fan/Museum District area, there's also VCU Medical Center just minutes away ... = a good hospital.

A couple links:

This page offers a nice description of both areas:

Good luck!

Charlottesville!! Check out the very long post I just wrote about it in the thread that says something about a sensitive issue. It has an amazing downtown area. Do some googling to find photos of Charlottesville

I would not consider any of those areas "quaint" Charlottesville especially, is a very high income area. It has a fantastic downtown area and if you want to drop over $400,000 to live near it, it's great. Floyd is quaint, Staunton is kinda quaint, but growing. Orange County is quaint. They at least have a small town mentality. Best of luck!

I'd recommend the Grandin Road area and Crystal Spring area of Roanoke.

Also, small town quaint areas are Floyd and Fincastle.

Lexington is almost painfully quaint but sadly, it's been "discovered" in the past couple of years which has driven up the real estate prices quite a bit. It's still a really nice little town with lots of history if you can swing the cost of housing.
