We are thinking of taking a cross country trip with stops along the way. The first stop will be in Virginia to spend a few hours at Virginia Safari Park. Which means we'll probably stop for the night (or maybe two), and spend some time seeing that part of VA. Looking at the map, we'd probably stay in either Lexington or Lynchburg, and do a few things in whichever one of those towns we choose. Or, we could stay the the Natural Bridge Conference Center--any thoughts on that?

Any thoughts on which of the two would be more fun to visit? I've never been to either. Also, suggestions on a place to stay or a great restaurant? Relatively inexpensive, if possible (although we don't have to go to extremes and stay at a place so cheap there's mold in the bathroom).

We might also stop to see the natural bridge while we're in the area.

Trip will be in August, if there happen to be any local events we should check out.

The campuses of Washington & Lee and VMI in Lexington are both a nice stop.

Southern Inn in Lexington is a great restaurant stop.

A really interesting place to stay on I-81 is the Wattstull Inn. I haven't stayed there but it has a spectacular hillside location, and has decent reviews for a roadside stop. (OTHERS please correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

It is pretty close to Lexington. The hotel prices in Lexington probably fluctuate depending on college events.

The PEAKS OF OTTER would be an awesome stop whether you stay in Lexington OR Lynchburg. You can take a bus up about 3/4 of the way to the stop of one of the peaks which makes the rest of the hike quite manageable - and you are rewarded with a full 360 degree view.

PEAKS OF OTTER Lodge is also a possible place to stay. GOOD LUCK!

Natural Bridge is also a great thing to see! It is very close to the Wattstull Inn (Arcadia VA) and a reasonable (scenic) drive from Peaks of Otter Lodge.

Thanks! Some great suggestions. We're starting to think we may want an extra day there, so we can hike Peaks of Otter, do the Natural Bridge, see a few things in one of the towns, and do the Safari park. There also might be an interesting cave around there. I'll have to find out more about that.

This isn’t Virginia related but since you said you are doing a road trip I thought I’d mention another website (hope it’s okay with CD, but I don’t see it as competition for them). If you haven’t been there check out ... road trip America dot com..... put that all together. I came across it this summer when we went cross country and have loved reading others trips plus use their forum for ideas and suggestions. Have fun!

Nice things to see in Lexington, but much more variety in Lynchburg, with much better lodging options. You really can't lose either way, though. I would check out their visitor center info and decide based on what you like to do.

Has anyone been to the Devil's Backbone brewery? Worth making a side trip?
