Glen Allen will definitly get you very close to the city while still being on the outskirts. When you say Glen Allen , If you are refering to the Short Pump area (near where 295 ends at interstate 64) be prepared for higher prices. The housing cost more but it is also newer. The traffic in that specific area is becoming horrible but there are lots of stores...basically everything you would need. I do not know anything about the schools. I have heard bad things about inner city schools in the area (mainly Richmond city) but I do not have first hand expierience. The Richmond City vicinity area of course has its very good spots and its very bad spots like all cities. If you'd like something slightly more rural/ less congested but still close to everything, Id recommend Hanover County. Gorgeous area, nice people, and I have heard nothing but positive things about there school systems, and from what I have heard, they are very concerned about and care for their students. If I were you I would stay away from the Southside of Richmond. If you start searching for apartments in the area, please heed this warning... Overall...the cheaper the rent the worse the location! I had to pay more for my place near the Henrico/Hanover County line but it was definitly much safer feeling ( I am a female in my 20's). My rent was 850 a month (no utilities included) but that was with a student discount. WIthout the discount it was about 910 (2bed 2 bth apartment).
As for jobs, Richmond is the capitol so there are PLENTY in the area. Your commute is going to vary widely based on your. Traffic becomes slow during rush hour on the interstates, but depending where you work, you can avoid this.

Some people commute to Fredericksburg and some even to DC (a 2 hour drive 1 way!) but I wouldnt recommend that to anyone.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions!

Public schools in western Henrico are great, so you shouldn't worry about that.
