I have heard that in regards to school tax, it is taken out of sales tax from school supplies you would buy at the store. And that it does not come out of your property taxes. Is this true? If so, does this apply to the whole state or just certain sections?

On another note, we are looking at the surrounding area of Winchester, Virginia. Research is research but the opinions from those who live there can be more dependable. What is the area like? Is it rural? How many, or how far, are the shopping areas, stores, etc. Also is there anyone that relocated there from a previous area? Do you like your new home? Do you regret the decision? We are coming down to visit next month. Are there any particular areas to go check out?

thanks

On the school tax, the schools are allocated funds from the property taxes that a community collects. There is not a "seperate" tax as you might experience up north. I can not comment on Winchester but perhaps others will.

I'm not certain, but I think Va. pools all the tax money and spends it on whatever....I mean, the lottery was supposed to fund education, and it takes in millions and millions, yet, every school system is begging for more....where did THAT money go?
Our roads are falling apart....I thought the gas tax was supposed to fund road improvements.....where is that money???

It was never meant to fund education, only to supplement the funding. In 2009, I believe the total lottery profit was only about $450 million. There are individual districts with budgets greater than that. I recently read an article that said the profit was about 7 percent of the State's budget for education.

You can't possibly be serious. Think it through a little.
