I kind of like it... but I already have my 3DSXL which isn't going anywhere (used almost exclusively while I'm traveling - plane, airport, hotel sometimes, etc.). Folds up, has larger screens, and has two little speakers. On the plus side the 2DS sounds light, well-balanced, and nice to hold especially with the controls next to the upper screen. Has all the storage, wireless, DS/DSi compatibility, etc. that the 3DS has.
I might worry about the screen getting scratched or gouged during travel though...
I will say I only rarely engage the stereoscopic 3D effect on my 3DSXL, so the lack thereof would not be the thing that turned me off of the 2DS. Several games engage 1x2 or even 2x2 full-scene anti-aliasing when stereo 3D is turned off, which creates a nice image.
However, a $100 price point (instead of $130) might have caught more flies as an "entry-level portable gaming system."
This is the realm of fantasy but if the thing was backwards compatible with the GBA (maybe even GB/GBC) I might even be eyeing it.
I saw the picture, and dig the design of it. It's the same, but different and there's going to be a market for it. As far as the screen, the DS was the only (outside of the redesigned GBA SP) game boy that had a covered screen, and I know they were having the issues with the hinges falling off. I still have a DS Lite, myself, I considered a #ds and realized I just didn't really have much of a use for the gimmick.
The 2DS looks like a winner to me and when it eventually reaches the $100 price point I'll probably pick it up so I can finally play Mario Kart 7. However, Mario Kart 8 on the Nintendo Wii U may make me forget the previous hand-held iteration altogether.
I have my vita, but there are some DS games I'd like to get. All the same, I never dug the dual screen lay out, I don't know why Nintendo just goes the gimmick route these days, the strength is in their I.P. However, the lack of 3D is a good thing in my book, I've used a 3DS and it was not pleasant...
Off topic, but anyone think they're gonna go the Sega route and just stick to games (and be much more successful than Sega at it)?
The possibility of playing 3DS software on a large screen TV is very exciting and has many Nintendo fans buzzing.
