I vote for the bookstore. Locally-owned independent bookstores get my business and browsing, too. It's just something I love. Bookstores and libraries are home to me.

Maybe you could do a brew & browse with good storytelling and such. Somehow, bookstore cafes have managed not to get all their books ruined by people eating and reading but alcohol may make things messier.

Actually the MRV does not have a place to buy shoes, sneakers or non-outdoor clothing. People come into my shop all the time asking for that and we send them to Montpelier.

You know... I was hoping to find a place to buy some new hiking boots. The only place I found was Clearwater Sports and they had very few options. The place we saw in Montpelier was closed over Labor Day weekend. I was surprised and disappointed that in such an outdoorsy area, I couldn't buy a pair of hiking boots. Even outdoor clothing stores had pretty limited selections.

Bizarre. In Rutland I'd have sent you to Sensible Shoes on Route 4, which was open Labor Day weekend.

Was the place you tried in Montpelier Onion River Sports or something else? Did you try the Army Navy in Barre? I realize it's too late now. Hope you got to do everything you wanted even without new hiking boots.

Admittedly, it was Sunday of Labor Day weekend, but they were closed both Sunday and Monday. It was Onion River Sports.

We just happened to be in Montpelier so we didn't try anywhere else. Weren't planning on doing a ton of hiking, just needed new boots.

In Montpelier there is also Miller Sports a block from Onion River Sports tho probably closed on LD. There is also Olympia Sports, Lennys Shoes and of course, Walmart in the Montpelier area.

If that's Olympia the chain, they sell junk. And I don't shop at Walmart out of principle, and besides, I want hiking shoes that are better quality than what you would find at Walmart.

I'll probably buy some from LL Bean or REI or somewhere down here.

Just giving you the availible options, not judging them.
