Hi all - I am planning a backpacking trip through Vermont in June. I'll be coming up from Texas by plane, so I won't have a car. I'd really like to go to Smugglers Notch or Lake Willoughby, but given the circumstance I'm open to suggestions. I'm thinking a 3-5 day trip. Is such a thing feasible? I hesitate to rent a vehicle because I would rather not start and stop in the same place. I was thinking of taking a bus or train in, and setting out from somewhere. Obviously I'm pretty early in the planning process, and any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you.

I probably will. Is the Long Trail easily accessible in Waterbury?

I live within walking distance from the northern terminus of the Long Trail. If you're planing to come this way, DM me. I'd be glad to give you a lift.

The southern portion of the Long Trail allows for more opportunites to use public transportation. A bus runs between Bennington and Manchester. Another bus runs between Rutland and Manchester. The Rutland bus can drop you off/pick you up at the Long Trail Inn.

Here are their websites:

Manchester Connector

Manchester, Bennington, Pownal, Williamstown Regional Route - Green Mountain Express

Hey, thanks square peg! If we go to the end up there, I'll get back to you. And they say New Englanders are cold!

Thanks for the info too, Flashback. Depending on where we start, this might prove to be a good option.

I appreciate the help everyone!
