I think it might be La Paz, Bolivia. My wife taught English for a year in Trinidad and Santa Cruz down in the lowlands.

A few hints: It’s on an island and near a major ancient archaeological site. Since antiquity, it’s been destroyed by nature (circa 1500 BCE) and invaders and rebuilt several times. It’s been occupied by Romans, Saracens, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, and Germans. Today, it is mostly overrun by tourists...

Aach, that's a hard one. I toured the Mediterranian on Google maps and could find no citadel with that dog-leg approach. The closest I came was Alexandria, Ceuta, and BenGhazi

About 3600 years ago a volcano erupted, destroying much of the island of Thera (present day Santorini). This eruption was also known as the Minoan eruption as the subsequent mega tsunami swept south through the Aegean, destroying the ancient main port and many of the important fleet ships of this seafaring culture. This large island’s present capital is at the location pictured, now fully under the governance of modern Greece.

Is that Hiraklion of Crete, Greece ?
It reminds me of a movie I saw in my childhood - Guns of Navarone.

Gregory Peck and Tony Quinn would be proud. It is indeed Heraklion! No bull (or Minotaur) about it.
