Yes, it's better to get some benefit - otherwise there may be delays in payment with closing and reopening, not to mention CA pays biweekly, which might further complicate the reopen. Don't cut it down to $1. Some states won't pay anything less than $5. I'm not sure about CA, but what's the point? Give yourself $10-$15 leeway, at least.

The bottom line (for anyone reading): the most I can do is 30 hours/week at $19/hour, resulting in a net income of $2370 instead of $1800. Therefore, any project that I take on while unemployed has to have value above and beyond bringing in an additional $570/mo.
