My friend began collecting UE at the end of April 2013 and he found a job beginning of October. Looks like his contract job will expire this week. Does he go back on his old benefit ( I beleieve he has 1 month left) or does he start a new 6 months? When he was on the old benefit, it was 73 weeks here in Illinois but I guess Congress has blocked extensions past 6 months.

He reopens the old claim to collect what remains of his State of Illinois benefits. He has until April 2014 to do this. Illinois will NOT open a new claim for him at this time, as his benefit year has not yet expired.

If his contract job was paid on W-2 or he has other W-2 earnings since he first applied in April 2013, he will be eligible for a new State of Illinois claim in April 2014, when his old claim expires.

He goes back on his old claim because it won't expire until April 2014, and then in April 2014, he can try to get a new claim.

Ok that is what I thought. But What do you mean try for a new claim? I dont think he would be succesful since he maxed out his old claim.

He applies for a new claim at his bye. Maxing out the old claim has nothing to do with eligibility for a new claim. Earnings between April 2013-2014 do.

Also, any lag earnings from Jan 2013 to April 2013 will come into play as well.
