Hi, I appreciate anyone who can help me out with this because I am so confused right now.

My BYE date ends 06/24/2012. I have not found a job yet. I live in NY, I was sent a letter stating I may be able to collect an additional extra 14 weeks. I called unemployment office and they told me I may open a new claim on the 25th of this month. My question what makes me qualify for an extension? How soon will I know if I get the extension. I am just so confused right now. Can someone please help?

Thank you!!

For CA, they automatically put you onto the extension without you needing to file it. I do not know about NY though.

As for why you qualify for an extension, you did not make enough money to be issued a new state claim by NY and thus you are going onto the federal extensions if you have not already been on it. Every BYE time they do this and even if you had money still left at that time, they will put you onto the very next tier.

As for when you will get it, you have to wait out a week here in California (waiting period) and it usually takes 1-2 weeks to process through but the turnaround speed is all up to the state you are in. With the waiting period, you actual lose a week to collect on that week but you still collect all the amount issued to you regardless. You just have to make sure you collect any monies before your next BYE comes up which in your case should not be a problem.

Just so you know all extensions will dry up come December 29th without further congressional action on extending them so that date is your limiting factor to collect right now. Hope that helps!

Thank you very much, but I'm not going to lie I'm still really confused.. LOL.. I guess my college education means nothing lol.. I get most of what you said but I think my confusion comes from understanding the Tiers.. I guess that should be my next topic question.. Thank you again for all your help!!
