Spoke to someone recently who calls himself a warrior for many reasons. The main one is that he has lasted over 5 years without having a job. He calls himself a warrior for being unemployed for this long, and for not giving in to society's demands. He doesn't have a laptop or internet either, sometimes he doesn't bathe for a week and feels proud of this. He feels he is above everyone because many wouldn't be able to survive the life he is living. His reasons for not working is that he doesn't want to miss any of his favorite TV shows. He's 27. He still lives with his parents. What would you say to this Warrior?

A warrior would support his parents. Not the other way around.

Mommy and Daddy are taking care of his every need and he calls himself a warrior? "Self serving, bloodsucking wuss" would be a more appropriate label.

Oh, and you might want to remind him that millions of people survive this way. They're called "children".

Sounds like a big time loser. Working and supporting yourself and others is "giving in to society's demands?" He's making excuses. Men past a certain age need to "leave the nest" and live on their own even if one chooses not to have their own "nest." Someone who isn't computer literate is unlikely to find a well paying job in the future. Besides, employers are biases against anyone with at least a 1 year gap so "5 years" is pretty much hopeless in the present economic climate. How do you cover that one up on the resume? You could if you have a good network of people but from the description, not too many people would want to be around someone who doesn't regularly bathe or is up to date on his (basic) computer technology skills.

Um...is this an actual person or a hypothetical?

it's a real person. I've tried for the past 2 years to motivate him to find a job but he just refuses to do it.

I don't necessarily think he "refuses." He was probably told "no" when he attempted so many times in the early phases of his unemployment to get a job, that his confidence is just destroyed. Not that that is justification, but a logical excuse. I also have no clue how to presuade anyone that's fallen this to snap out of it. A similiar story is my neighbor that lived just far enough that I didn't have to worry about him asking to move in is that while he was losing everything, he lost his license, social security card, and birth certificate, and he uses the lack of documentation as his excuse to not look for work. I paid for a replacement license and birth certificate for him, and he's never picked up the birth certificate from me, and lost the replacement ID.

This could be laziness, Or depression. Either way it's not good.

A "Warrior" would be someone who strives to get ahead, Willing to overcome any obstacle. To do whatever it takes and go as far as it takes to move ahead. A fighter. The guy who will get his teeth knocked out, And dust himself off and smile a broken smile and say "That's all ya got princess?" And hit back harder. Giving up is easy, its the challenge that's hard.

He's still young enough to turn this around, with maximum effort.
