I was on a LOA and I was scheduled to return to work on 6/1. I did not return and was terminated on 6/2. I filed for unemployment and they scheduled a phone interview for later this month. What will they ask me? Will they contact my former employeer? I am not sure what to expect from the call.
They will contact your former employer who will tell them you did not come back to work as scheduled. The phone interviewer will ask the circumstances of your leaving this job.
Curious - why did you file for unemployment when you chose to quit? They will want to know that.
I did not return from leave because I contacted my employeer several times during my leave and never did they respond to any of my emails or phone messages. They made me feel like they were upset with me and didn' want me back so I felt very strange and uncomfortable when it was time to go back so I didn't go back.

so what is the process? I call in and file a claim, they schedule the phone interview...when do they contact my former employeer? Is it by phone or letter? If they dont respond what happens?
They send a letter to your employer when you file your claim. Sometimes the claim is held until the employer responds. Sometimes benefits are paid pending a response. It depends on the state and the situation.
I've been dealing w/ NJ Dept of Labor since November 2010. The claims examiner interview (phone call) is just a series of questions about why you are not working: did you get fired? did you quit? the reasons for either, do you have documentation to prove your case? they will verify your dates of employment, job duties, etc. Your employer has a right to participate in the call. Mine did not. But...he did file a last minute appeal, failed to appear or participate in the telephone hearings, etc. When I was about to collect my final check, my employer decided he wanted to tell his version of the story. (all lies) The State of NJ found him to be credible & reversed the decision. Now they want me to pay back all benefits, $9,360.00. All I can offer you is this: keep all records, notices, phone bills, copies of employment handbooks, e-mails, etc. If you must appeal anything include all your documents & adhere to the deadlines. Good luck to you!
