Can you guys recommend any other shows along the lines of those? I heard wire was the best but I can't find any episodes of it because it was so long ago. Not a big fan of mob series like Sopranos either.
I would like to add Damages, I believe you can see 1 and 2 on Netflix. Season 1 got me hooked. Just watched 4 on Amazon and to me it was good but not as good as 1 through 3. It looks like 5 is going to be VERY good, can't wait!

I love SONS OF ANARCHY, but if you didn't like the Sopranos, you might not like it. But you said you liked THE SHIELD, and one of the guys who worked on the shield created S.O.A.
JUSTIFIED is excellent.
THE WIRED is fantastic. All seasons are available on DVD. But again, if you didn't like The Sopranos, you may not like the Wire.
If you like The Walking Dead, you might give JERICHO a try. It's another collapse-of-society show, but no zombies.
The first two season of ALIAS are excellent. The second season finale will almost blow your mind. Which is why you should stop watching right there, because the first episode of Season 3 completely ruins it.
I like what I've seen of DAMAGES so far, but it's one of those shows I have to be in the mood to enjoy.
THE DEAD ZONE was great for 3 or 4 seasons, but it went on too long. It was very tired by the end.
VERONICA MARS is fantastic. Both dramatic and quirky.
WISEGUY. An old CBS show from the '80s. Very good. It's about an undercover agent who infiltrates the mob.

I used to like it, not sure about this season. It jumps around so much, I can't keep track of what's going on.
Nobody mentioned Homeland? Fantastic show, can't wait for the new season. The two best shows on television are Breaking Bad and Homeland imo.
Shucks, I forgot Dexter, make that 3 best of shows.
