Or maybe you just talked to a crazy person. And one crazy person =/= what the entire city or state thinks.

I think it is funny how jealousy rears its head. I've seen couples walking down the street, she is wearing a top that is exposing everything but her nipples (and those are poking through the top) and her boyfriend belligerently says "What are you looking at?" Dude, you don't know? But if you stare at his car or truck and say "Nice, would love to drive that" he's all proud and willing to lift the hood for you.

My parents were yellow dog Democrats, but my dad once admitted (sheepishly) he voted for Eisenhower. I'm more of the blue dog variety, although I really think I'm a moderate with some liberal leanings. I'm not a fan of Bush nor the current president.

Sorta funny, this thread began 2007 only a few posts back. I rarely think to notice the date until it's too late.

I know what you mean. I have the utmost respect and admiration for women. I was raised by my mom and two older sisters, have my wonderful wife and two incredible daughters, and have worked largely in female-dominated professions.

I don't mean to objectify women.

At the same time I find women beautiful and highly attractive in the physical sense as well. I try not to be creepy or rude, or stare, but my thing is women who wear tight pants that really accentuate their behinds. Sometimes they even have something written across the butts of their pants.

I mean, particularly if there is something written across the rear end, I'm going to be looking, if only just to catch up with my reading.

That's just human, y'know?

you hit the nail on the head. I am very conservative (or so I thought)- I'm against government corruption, against wasteful spending, in favor of a balanced budget, i have a "dont tread on me" attitude, in support of the constitution, and very limited government, etc. Having moved to Oklahoma, it makes me feel like I'm liberal because a lot of people here seem to want to control things like drug use, alcohol consumption, gays marrying each other, what you believe for religion; they want to dictate how you live your life just as bad as liberals. They posted a 10 commandments at the state capitol and don't allow opposing billboards or opinions. There is heavy censorship. There is a 9% sales tax, even on groceries. It's very strange.

I've wondered the same things tkx7. Even though I'm from a fairly conservative area (and by conservative I don't mean any particular political party, but actual legislation), it was pretty much "mind your own business" socially as long as you weren't hurting anyone else. There are "values" signs around Owasso which state things like, and I quote, "Rejecting Wrong Desires and Doing What is Right". All well and good, until you ask the next logical question: Who decides what Wrong Desires are? Kind of Orwellian.

Being conservative here also means "social" conservativism, which has come along with overwhelming numbers of conservative-leaning voters (which is also why conservatives are icked-out by the west coast or upper Northeast - overwhelming majority). If you're running as a conservative candidate in Oklahoma, it seems to be who can be the "most" conservative. It can feel a little like a theocracy.

Again, I'm a newbie around here, so I'm only stating what seems to be the case from my own viewpoint.

Wrong Desires according to many of the "social" conservatives are as follows:
The desire to not sleep with a loaded handgun under your pillow. Noth'n says love'n like Smith n' Wesson.
The desire to watch Daily Show or Colbert Report. Fox News is serious business and shouldn't be made fun of. They have serious corporate sponsors like Viagra, Cialis, Depends, Metamucil, Prunes, Gold, ect. and have serious news stories about how Jesus and Santa are white (first Jewish and Turkish men I've heard of to be ever be confused as WASPs).
The desire to say "Hi" to a Latino or Latina. They're all illegal even though their families have likely lived in the US for generations and fought in a number of wars for the US. Viva la Migra! (and Taco Tuesday)
The desire to watch the World Cup. Who names their trophy after an athletic supporter? I'll tell you, perverted gay Commies!
The desire to empathize with anyone who is going through a tough time. Those people brought it upon themselves by driving in that intersection or letting their kids watch TV or not finding a bathroom in time or getting in their way at church or getting cancer, which is only caused by being on drugs or other filthy living. They need to be ostracized, particularly at Church. They have problems and you don't want them to know you have problems too. They need tough love, like a 3 hour speech on why their gonna burn in hell and you aren't 'cause you have so much faith that Jesus granted you a $25,000 limit on your MasterCard.

The worst of all is the desire to vote for or be seen in public with anyone who has accepted the mark of the devil or (D) as their friends in the media have spun it. That's wrong. That's evil. You just gave Nancy Pelosi your first born son and told her to do what she wants with him. You, Hilary and Obama are taking away their Medicare. They don't want government in their lives! It wasn't there before! Now these hard working retirees have to take their Social Security check and spend it on food and medicine instead of Chik-fil-A and slot machines which are proven economic generators of wealth.

Kidding aside, I know what you mean. I was a conservative in liberal areas and am a liberal here. The things that social conservatives get upset about the most are often the very things they are attracted to. I wish they got upset about the way government spends its money as much as the way government may condone gay marriage. We could change the budget rules so the President has the power of the Signature and Congress has the power of the Purse. The US operated that way for 197 years that way and did a good job of limiting spending. I could care less about Adam and Steve buying a house unless I, as a tax payer, am subsidizing a subprime loan for them. Even then, I'm just mad about the subsidy.

At least social conservatives aren't attracted to porn and gambling as much as they used to be. Wow, it's been 15 years since Penthouse magazine turned them on so much that they tried to ban it.
