Why wouldn't anyone want to pay for this? If you didn't have it and needed the service, wouldn't the billed cost be very high?

I can't even imagine what it would cost to be billed for the fire dept to come to your house, especially if you had a fire. It seems to me that the the subscription would be very cheap compared to this.

Wow!! Just bought a home in the foothills and didn't realize that fire was not covered. Need to pay $850 a year for a 4000 sqft home. And I think we are paying as much taxes as anyone else in the city (close to 1.1% of the sale price).

Default Cost Rural Metro

My cost 2010 = $555.00

goes up every year (seems out of proportion to inflation rate)

maybe they should have some competition

I wonder what percentage of the bill goes to the highly generous pensions?

Lots of folks living outside of the city limits aren't adequately covered by their local fire departments. In New Mexico we have volunteer fire departments who were born from the fact that the folks living out in the country had to fend for themselves. We have a regional fire department just 2 miles from our door but due to the terrain and the woods that we live in, it's doubtful that they would be able to get here in time for a fire at our place and, in the event of a wildfire that threatened the whole neighborhood, our chances would be nil.
We had a truck spontaneouly ignite on our property. It was sitting under a grove of pinon trees during a drought. We called the fire department on the way out to putting out the fire - which we were able to do because we had a hose adapted sprayer full of a foam called NovaCool UEF. After using a couple of conventional chemical extinguishers without any luck, the NovaCool put it out almost instantly. By the time the first responders got there, the truck fire was not only out, it was cool to the touch. These three guys were pretty impressed, I've got to tell you.
I was so impressed that I am now offering this product to others living in similar situations. There are many affordable options and it puts you in control, not having to wait on emergency personnel. The foams these days, and NovaCool UEF in particular, are made to be sprayed onto a home or structure and the surrounding vegetation, enveloping them in suds or bubbles that provide protection during a fire. Pretty amazing, really.
I know this sounds like a commercial but the reason I got into this business is that I realized that there are many others out there like me who prefer a proactive approach to protecting what is ours. So, for what it's worth to you, there are additional options to provide peace of mind. Believe me, whenever their is a fire in the area, which is frequently, I am pretty darn glad to know that I at least have a chance to protect our property.
