I would agree with Marcy1210. We looked in Oro Valley but at the time couldn't find the right house. We ended up about a mile south of Oro Valley. Many people think we are in Oro Valley but we are not. Our kids went to HS in Oro Valley as well. Even now, if we were to run into the right house, we might move.

I have found the Oro Valley police very friendly as well. Not that the Pima County Sheriff's Police aren't friendly, I just think they are understaffed and don't have much time to talk to people as Oro Valley does.

Yes the Oro Valley police are around more and stopping people more but I think that is one thing that Pima County and Tucson don't have the manpower for. It is one thing that I believe is missing. People would drive more sanely if there was more police presence.

I would also choose OV over GV if you are active and want things to do. A lot of events in GV are planned by the active adult communities (of which there are many) but if you live independently the TOWN of OV has much more to do in every respect. If you can't find a rental within your budget, look just a bit south of OV. There's an area that falls between the City of Tucson, Oro Valley, and Marana that is unincorporated Pima County. It is served by the Pima Co. Sheriff's office (from my experience very responsive to residents' needs).

All in this pocket of Tucson you will find:
-Northwest Medical Center (with every medical specialty you can imagine),
-NW Pima Co. Community College,
-Nanini County Library
-Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Park (walking & biking trails),
-Arthur Pack Regional Park (with a nice desert-landscaped public golf course cost-effective for seniors),
-Omni Tucson Resort and Spa (with an expensive and nationally famous golf course & fancy restaurants),
-the newest/largest YMCA in Tucson (with indoor pools for swimming when it's too cold OR too hot — which is a thing here), -the largest Catholic Church in Tucson as well as religious denominations of every faith,
-beaucoup shopping and dining sites, as well as services like banks, auto service, & salons.

And you're still close enough to Oro Valley to take advantage of their good features (like THEIR fantastic library).

There is one more gem between OV and the north side of Tucson city limits, in the area called Casas Adobes: Tohono Chul park. It is a beautiful park with a huge variety of desert trees, cactus and plants. It is not as large as the more famous Sonoran Desert Museum near Saguaro National Park on the west side, but it makes for a good visit in the different seasons.

The Cañada del Oro trail for bike riding or walking also runs from Oro Valley through Casas Adobes, headed southwest to the Santa Cruz river bike trail (near I-10). The Santa Cruz river trail connects a short distance south of the junction to the Rillito river trail and the 60 mile long main loop route around the Tucson metro area. Many of the main streets in the northwest area / Casas Adobes have a bike lane for bike riding, but avoid Oracle Rd due to the constant amount of car traffic. These bike lanes make it possible to get around from A to B pretty well on a bike. Pick up a free, excellent map of bike routes at any Pima County public library.

It really all depends on what you are looking for. I moved to Green Valley coming up on 6 years ago now from Oregon. I lived semi-rural there and I find Green Valley to also be semi-rural. Lots of animal life here and far less traffic. There is almost everything here you need with the exception of big malls and outlet stores. Please see my Green Valley centric youtube channel to get a flavor of Green Valley at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8U...e_polymer=true

In Green Valley we have:

The Santa Rita mountains which includes Madera Canyon which is great for hiking and bird watching.

The Green Valley Performing Arts Center

The Continental Plaza shopping mall

Green Valley Village shopping center

Proximity to Tubac (20 minutes south) which is an artist enclave with many different types of stores

Duval Mine Road shopping center

Titan Missile Museum

This is what it looks like in my neighborhood

The Desert Diamond Casino is less than 10 minutes north if you like that kind of entertainment

Also, there are a ton of volunteer opportunities in Green Valley which would allow you to give back as well as get to know some people. My wife volunteers at Friends in Deed which is a non-profit that loans out durable medical equipment to people in Green Valley at no charge. I hope this helps you make up your mind! All the best!!!

I think that they differ so much you would really need to come and see for yourself. I think they are apples and oranges really. One is in the center of everything and the other is a bit off the beaten path.

Plus between the Pima County Sheriff's Department and the Oro Valley PD there is little to no homeless or sketchy people hanging around. Both departments will actively encourage homeless people to relocate over the Tucson city line.
What's a "granny turn"? Not heard of that before.

A super wide turn. Technically an illegal lane change, go from the right lane and swing out to the left lane, then back to the right lane and into the parking lot. A couple of elderly family members in Oro Valley got their first traffic ticket in 50 years from the OV Police Department because of their wide radius turns. The town is so safe the cops have a lot of time on their hands to be very vigilant over traffic laws that see no enforcement anywhere else in Pima County.
