Is there somewhere in Tucson where I could walk out my door and find produce, butchers, banks, post office and other stores in a few block walking distance? Malls give me the creeps and would like to park my caar and leave it

I was going to say near foothills mall where I live, there's all of that stuff except a butcher, but there is a Walmart in walking distance, grocery store, bank, post office, bookstore and other things, but there is the mall there too. If you could tolerate the mall there's plenty of apartments there.

I live Southeast of the Tucson Mall, Boompa . . .

Rarely hit the mall but have pretty much everything I want and/or need within walking distance.

Close to the university, in central Tucson, there are grocery stores (both chain stores and local ones) butcher shops, bakeries, etc. I live close by (I'm not a student, but I work for the university), and I have been able to find most everything I need. Try east of campus (specially the Sam Hughes area), and avoid north of Speedway and south of 6th, specially directly below the main campus; those are the areas with the most students.

Another area I like that that has everything is Downtown. Some parts are a little too trendy, though. Barrio Hollywood, Barrio Viejo, and Barrio Santa Rosa are quieter, and the houses are very cute. You have Santa Cruz farmer's market, Mercado San Agustin, the Mexican butcher shops in Menlo Park, etc. There are also plenty of nice restaurants around.

Those are the areas I know about. I hope it helps. Cheers.

might be hard to snag, but maybe a guest house in the Sam Hughes neighborhood?....as mendoza said, the arterial streets have great businesses....not as densely packed as eastern cities, but walkable and pleasant...library, upscale market (Rincon), PO, banks, some chain places, the UA for year-round culture (and a library there, too!), nice park (Himmel)....area is bounded by Campbell, Speedway, Country Club, and Broadway....

I'm not in a hurry, in fact right now Sierra Vista is fine, but I will start looking in the area you mentions and pounce when I see something I like.

I was up in the University area yesterday, construction has that whole area looking like a war zone.
