I can relate to your opinion, though as I stated upthread, it's my belief that we should punish actions, not people. Nobody should get a pass on murder. I think Dahmer was one one of the rare serial killers that was not a true psychopath / sociopath.

I would not dream of giving any killer a pass. Certainly not after 18 murders. I'm just saying I do feel bad for him in a way.

Bear in mind that "sociopath" and "psychopath" are just garbage can terms for "he did something really bad." It's not very meaningful except to measure how afraid the public is of that person.

I don't feel sorry for ANY person that kills another-I don't mean in self defense.

I have a Masters degree in Psychology (emphasis in Criminal). I took a homicide class...I remember seeing the case files for Jeff Dahmer and Ted Bundy...the most horiffic autopsy photos and crime scene photos I've ever seen..I still think of them to this day and I took the class 4 years ago....if there is a hell...well I hope they are roting in it. I cannot have any sympathy for people who killed in such an evil way..while the victims I'm sure were begging...pleading...
One item haunts me to this day...Jeff Dahmer used thousands of car freshners to mask the smell..those little pine trees..he lined them up in his apartment-on the ceiling..I don't know why but that haunted me..thousands of little pine trees...

I didn't think you were excusing the crimes of Dahmer. Sorry if my remark came off that way.

I don't agree that sociopath and psychopath are just garbage can terms. I've met a couple.

I was going to mention that, too.

I do believe the brains of abused and neglected children are forever damaged and this can lead to violent crimes. The sad part is many are not helped before it's too late.

An interesting book on this: Ghosts from the Nursery: Tracing the Roots of Violence: Robin Karr-Morse, Meredith S. Wiley, Dr. T. Berry Brazelton: Amazon.com: Books.

A few folks already mentioned Andrea Yates. That's one of those rare cases where people around the killer (in this case her husband and to a lesser extent a few friends/professionals) are the real murderers. How someone that ill got to that point with the opportunity to kill is nearly as sad as what happened to those kids.

Brains can be damaged due to abuse (most got hit on the head) but not all abused go on to become abusers or killers...and Dahmer enjoyed what he did; all that "please stop me" "kill me" crap is just a way to say "feel sorry for poor little old me"...He was many things combined: a psychopath, sociopath, rapist, pedophile, necrophile, the list goes on...but he knew what he was doing and liked it...same with Gacy and other horrible killers. I feel no empathy at all! It's also about choice, if you're abused you can think "OK I'll do it to others now so they know what it's like" or you can do what you can to have a decent life anyway...You can get help, you can vent in other ways than by hurting other people.
