I have travelled alone, and traveled solo with a group. The latter is like a bike trip I did with a touring company. The comapny carried my bags from point A to B and provided meals along the way. The group was 8 to 10 single folks and it wasnt a pickup type of thing, just folks who had an interest in doing something...like biking red rocks in Utah or Europe.
Somehow I think I answered this one somewhere, but yes, solo, by preference. This way I can come and go anywhere anytime without either having to drag someone else along. If I want to get up at 3am and go to the lobby for coffee, no problem. If I wanna party all night somewhere and come back when Im good and ready, I can. If I wanna walk around town, alone, and enjoy window shopping, no problem.
Groups never traveled the byways like I did. Travel smart, carry a good trucker's map, a CB, cell phone and charger, and flashlight. You'll be fine. I always took my big dog, too. He loved to travel.
An awesome solo vacation could be a dude ranch vacation. Here there are families, other solo vacationers, and couples. Its fun to meet people and also be away from people at the same time, you get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and relax and enjoy what is going on around you. The Dude Ranchers' Association is a great place to find the vacation that fits your budget, needs, and wants. Google them!
