I guess this is why my wife always reminds me to ask about prices:

https://nypost.com/2022/08/08/notori...rinks-oysters/

"Less than a week after Canadian tourists were allegedly overcharged nearly $600 by Greece’s notorious DK Oyster, the restaurant is going viral for yet another incident of alleged epicurean extortion. This time, the Mykonos-based eatery allegedly charged a US couple a wallet-sapping $510 for a dozen oysters and four drinks."

This creep owner should be in prison.

Anybody ever experience anything like this in their travels?

There was a cruise customer who hired a cab in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico at the cruise port.. At the end of the drive, the cab driver asked for a credit card over cash. She thought that she was charged NP400 or US$20. She was actually charged US$400. With the help of the resort employees, she was able to call her bank and cancel the transaction as well as report the taxi driver to local authorities.

In San Juan, PR, no matter where you go in a cab, the cab fare is going to end up at $25. There are no meters on any of the cabs to control the overcharging.

Also in San Juan, we were overcharged twice at restaurants. The amount was not that much BUT the minute we questioned being overcharged suddenly, none of the employees could speak English if you get my drift.

You are always going to face scams and the like. I left on February 2nd on a 35 day trip to the Caribbean. By February 8th, my credit card was cancelled by the bank due to suspicious activity - a $140 charge to Apple which came out of Korea. I am glad that I took the time to let my bank have my travel itinerary.

Hoping to be polite, the customers bought two beers, two martinis and a dozen oysters
I couldn't imagine doing this without first seeing a menu showing how much it was going to cost.

Oh, one gets the menu. But instead of per oyster, its per gram.

Gotta read the fine print ... The very fine print.

The article specifically says they didn't know the drink prices before ordering.

And? Most cocktail menus at decent places don't have prices.

But the Greek oyster scam, even with the menu, is about charging per gram instead of per oyster. There isn't any indication in the article that the drinks were the big expense.

Nonsense, you can find the price of cocktails before ordering anywhere. If you ask for a menu with prices and they can't give you one you leave, you don't just order blind.

This restaurant's scam is about overcharging for drinks and food, go look at their TripAdvisor page:

- over 60 EUR for beer
- Their mojito cost $58 each and it’s not even good.
- We did not dream each drink would be €59!
- order the outrageously priced cocktails (68 euro for a double)

Nope, a very well touted high end restaurant in a town near me doesn't have drink prices on the menu. Order a margarita and it comes to $19, because they have a "mixologist" and the drinks are "special." Ask first, always.
