My family would like to vacation in March, but my gosh the airfare is off the charts. To fly two hours from Texas to Cozumel the airfare is over a thousand dollars apiece. I cannot justify paying that much. Why is airfare so expensive when gas prices have gone down?

I've been booking a fee flights, Ecuador and a few domestic, but haven't found them that bad.

The problems I'm having is flights that used to be direct or 1 connection have more connections and much longer travel times.

I bailed on Peru as what was under 9 hrs total became like 16+. With what's going on there now, probably for the best.

By the way, I just plugged in Providence to Cozumel for some dates in March and they were under $500 r/t.

You are looking at Cozumel in March. The very start of tourist season, when everybody wants to get to a warm country during Spring break.

The tickets are expensive because everybody wants to go at the same time, and the airlines can bank cash due to demand.

Airline ticket prices are based upon expected demand. Sometimes tickets are sold at a loss because some revenue is better than none. During high season prices will be at their peak. Christmas or Spring Break, for example.

Ex: New York to Honolulu is often cheaper than Los Angeles to Honolulu even though NY is twice as far.

Ticket prices for a particular flight will go up and down using a complicated formula as the flight date nears.

Wow! That's pretty decent. I was just looking from Boston to Cozumel and it's further to Cozumel than Austin or Houston is and flying from Boston is cheaper. Go figure.

We don't have to go to Cozumel, but we want to go diving, so we could also go to a few places in the Caribbean but once again, too expensive. I just cannot justify spending that amount of money.

We booked Hamilton Island to Brisbane in July. It is mid-winter and between the school vacation and race week at HI, so should be off-season, but it was about double the cost we used to get pre Covid.
Then booked a flight to Lisbon from Sydney on Emirates, about twenty-two hours but only one short transit stop in Dubai. What surprised us was that the 6am flight is about $500 cheaper than the evening flight. I would expect it to be a bit cheaper, but not that much.

Some sites break down the fares. A lot of fares, more than half the price goes to fees and taxes. I saw one transatlantic fare once where the airline barely got $100 of the total.

In Philippines, published domestic fares can be as little as ten bucks each way, .including fees/tax.

At the same time, fares in the Caribbean are always nearly $100 and up and up, even to the next island.

From the US, fares to Australia are double what they are to Sangapore, same distamce. Why?

. Why is airfare so expensive?

You ain't seen nothing yet... Fuel, carbon taxes, litigation, wage inflation, union demands, replacement part costs, more regulations...

2 flts tomorrow... $29 & $39 + a companion flies free.

March flights to a spring break destination? No thanks... $$$$ & people. Lots of people. Increased costs, waits, hassle.

Can't rep you again! After the business with Southwest and then the FAA mess this week, I am staying away from airports. BTW, I live in El Paso and the "undocumented immigrants" have taken over our airport. UGH

It's not just the fuel.

Other factors include:

Economy of scale: a route that's commonly taken will be cheaper than a route that's niche, because they can make up for low ticket prices by selling high volume.

What time of the week/month/year you book it, and how far in advance you book it.
