Hi, fisher. A fabulous resource I use to help me plan EVERY trip: TripAdvisor.com. It's a site where real travelers report their real impressions of their experiences in cities, towns, attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc. everywhere. This will open to South Carolina; in the left column are all the useful links you'll need.
South Carolina Tourism - South Carolina Vacation Reviews - South Carolina Vacations - TripAdvisor

Beaufort NC may be a little further than you want to travel, but a new championship golf club opened recently...The North River Club. And I think you could find accommodations in a B & B in Beaufort or on Bogue Banks (Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle) within your budget...could make a nice getaway..and once you're in Beaufort, you can ditch your car and walk or ride bikes everywhere...kind of cool to stroll around town and see the sights and the 300 year old homes.

This may be a bit farther than you want, but it's WELL worth the drive---Lido Key, in Sarasota! Very tropical and beachy---lots of shops and restaurants within walking distance, a really GREAT beach with that quartz sand (that doesn't get hot----heaven!) and it's a BEAUTIFUL place!
Try it!
