To each his own. To me, what you have referred to as a "cesspool" is the most amazing, enchanting, beautiful city in the world.
I'm with him on this. Venice is a dump, a couple of pitiful canals, massive inflated prices to suck every last tourist penny, mediocre food compared to the rest of italy. The only unfathomable thing is how the marketing department keeps managing to persuade people to go.
I hope no one minds a bump. I made the thread three years ago, and there might be some new posters interested in answering. Hoping to get back to Italy on my birthday in two years.

I would choose Amalfi Coast, Palermo, and Milan ahead of Venice......surprised not to see a mention of Puglia thus far (though not a “3rd place” contender).

If someone is looking for something very different, I'd suggest Civita di Bagnoregio and Taormina. Both locales appeal to folks that enjoy history while traveling abroad.
Bagnoregio is only accessible by a rope bridge. No vehicles allowed. Prepare to walk to visit the town.
Taormina has an upper & lower part. Both areas appeal to tourists.
I chose Milan, based on the number and quality of its attractions.
In no particular order and not a comprehensive list:
-La Scala
-Last Supper painting (feel sorry for the guy charged with painting the opposite wall)
-The Duomo
-Other interesting churches eg Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore and San Bernardino alle Ossa
-Museums, eg Pinacoteca di Brera and Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, featuring artists such as Raphael, Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Rubens.
-Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II
-easy day trip to scenic Lake Como

And in the same spirit, I'd suggest checking out Matera; the whole town was carved out of a cave-riddled hillside, with the original dwellings being inside the caves.

Also
-Castle Sforza
-The canals
and,
-though you did say Basilca San Lorenzo, it is worth noting that there are some ancient Roman columns in front of it.
